What to eat to maintain healthy hair

September 4th, 2015

For gorgeous healthy-looking hair you need a great hairdresser, a good at-home haircare routine, and a balanced diet. Eating the right foods will also help your mood and improve your skin, and who doesn’t want that?! So, we’ve put together our list of the types of foods you need to be eating to achieve glorious luscious locks!

Protein – As hair is made up of proteins, it is a crucial part of your diet to keep your hair strong and healthy!
Lack of protein can lead to your hair becoming dry and weak. Good sources of protein: Chicken, fish, dairy and eggs.

Iron – An especially important element as too little iron can lead to hair loss. Foods such as red meats, chicken, fish, lentils, spinach and other leafy green vegetables make iron readily available to the body.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant which also aids the absorption of iron. Some of the best sources are berries and fruits such as blackcurrants, strawberries, oranges and kiwifruits.

Vitamin A – Vitamin A is required by the body to make sebum – an oily substance created by our hairs sebaceous glands – providing a natural conditioner for a healthy scalp. Without sebum we may experience itchy and dry scalps. Orange/Yellow vegetables such as carrots, pumpkins and kumara are high in beta-caratane, which is what makes vitamin A!
